Mbira is an ancient Zimbabwean
musical instrument with a large history and tradition behind it.
It has been used in cermonies called
bira for hundreds of years.
These ceremonies are held to call the sacred spirits of the deceased in
Zimbabwe, down to the living people whom are in search of advice
and words of wisdom to live and survive by.
At these all-night, music-filled, energetic, amazing ceremonies,
there are usually 2 or 3 highly respected masters of mbira, playing accompanied
by
hosho (gourd shakers) and ngoma (drum), as well as clapping, singing,
whistling and dancing from the participants.
